What is a dream?

Brown Girl Dreaming by Jacqueline Woodson Copyright Date: August 28, 2014
Biography
A girl that had a dream through poetry and pose!  Jacqueline grows up in a time where times are hard. She has family in which she is very close to and can call herself a traveler at young ages due to the fact she was born in Ohio, moved to Greenville, South Carolina and later moved to New York. The times and the challenges at each phase of her journey are hard. The one dream she has is to be a writer. Readers like me can relate to Jacqueline because of her relationship with her grandfather who dies. This is a hard time for Jacqueline which turns her writing into a time of darkness. This book hits civil rights, stories of South Carolina and a journey of a girl who lives out her dream of becoming a writer at an early age.
Teachers, this would be a great read to do with your students by telling a story through poetry. The book paints a picture of South Carolina in different times which can lead to many discussions with students. It connects with the Civil War and state standards.
Another great teaching moment would be all the metaphors and similes found throughout the book. You could take your groups and divide them into pages to find the similes and metaphors and create a padlet for this information for the whole class to share.
